Youth Advocacy: Challenging the Private Sector to do Better & Calling for Child-Safe Legislation
In an effort to be clever and punny; the Canadian company Garage Clothing recently used the phrase “Send Nudes” as the main slogan to promote a new, skin-tone clothing line. This marketing gimmick was used in social media posts and emails that ended up in the inboxes of impressionable tweens and teens who are frequent customers.
At OneChild, we’ve seen time and time again how the risky practice of “sending nudes” among uninformed children can end with sextortion and even facilitate cybersex trafficking.
Naturally, the empowered youth of our organization were angered. They added their voices to survivors, parents, law enforcement and other allies to denounce this campaign in a PSA, giving the company the opportunity to get educated about the dangers of marketing campaigns like “send nudes.”
When the company refused, we decided to step back and put the advertising industry in Canada under the microscope and its role in promoting the sexualization of children.
Last year, the federal government introduced Bill C-10, an act to amend the Broadcasting Act. The Bill calls for important changes, including that the Act be extended beyond TV and radio, to programming on the Internet. Along with survivor expert Timea Nagy, OneChild is supporting changes to the Bill that would add policy goals around protecting children from sexually explicit content and preventing the broadcasting of sexual violence. We recently submitted a brief to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage who is currently studying the Bill.
Our youth members are continuing their advocacy. They’ve teamed up with Timea Nagy, and are working on a campaign to call out other companies and call in companies to use their platform to spread messages targeted at children, centred on online safety and empowerment.
