Research

Research with young people, not just about them.

Children and youth are often the first to see how sexual exploitation is changing and evolving — online, at school, among their peers and in their communities.

We partner with universities and children and youth as co-researchers, bringing together academic expertise with young people’s perspectives and real-life experiences to better understand sexual exploitation, uncover what’s being missed, and identify what needs to change to keep them safe.

HELP YOUNG PEOPLE SHAPE RESEARCH

Youth co-researchers working together

Too often, children are treated only as the subjects of research.

We do things differently.

We create meaningful and safe ways for children and youth — including those who have experienced sexual exploitation — to help shape the questions we ask, tell us what we’re missing, make sense of what we learn, and influence the recommendations that come from it.

The research we collaborate on is grounded not only in what the evidence tells us, but in what young people themselves are seeing, experiencing and saying they need.

What’s Putting Children at Risk?

We explore how technology, relationships, social pressures and other factors can increase children’s vulnerability to sexual exploitation.

Where Are We Falling Short?

We identify gaps in prevention, protection, services, policies and systems by asking young people what is — and isn’t — working.

What Needs to Change?

We turn what we learn into practical recommendations that can help governments, schools, technology companies and others better protect children.

FROM EVIDENCE TO ACTION

We turn what we learn into action.

The research we collaborate on isn’t simply published and forgotten. We use it to:

01

Strengthen our prevention education programs and resources for children, parents, school staff and more.

02

Bring young people’s recommendations to decision-makers in government and organizations.

03

Advocate for stronger laws and protections for children.

04

Help other organizations better understand what children need.

05

Give children and youth evidence they can use to push for change themselves.

Bringing children, researchers and decision-makers together.

To better understand sexual exploitation and build responses that reflect the realities children face today.

Research Highlights

We’re proud and grateful to work alongside university partners who bring their research expertise and share our commitment to meaningfully involving children and youth.

Partnering on Research on Young People's Digital Rights with Trent University

We’re delighted to be working with lead researcher, Dr. Madison Moore, Department of Child & Youth Studies at Trent University to explore the research questions: What do young people know about their digital rights, and how do those rights materialize in online spaces? How do their digital rights materialize in online spaces? OneChild youth members aged 14-21 formed a Youth Advisory Board where they were active partners engaged in Participatory Action Research and Co-Design to unpack their insights and viewpoint on their digital rights are developing a workshop series to educate fellow youth, parents and those working in app design.

Furthering Research on Child Activism with King's University College

In partnership with Dr. Dustin Ciufo, Department of Child and Youth Studies at King’s University College at Western University; OneChild youth members engaged in the research project Collaborating for a Cause: How Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Schools can Foster Sustainable Child Activism. For this project, the youth participated in focus groups where they explored the barriers they face, especially in taking action in schools to counter child sexual exploitation—and what they need from these organizations and schools to lead and advocate for change. Are you an educator interested in the research results and looking for practical tips on how you can better ensure that students have lasting opportunities to take action on issues that matter to them? OneChild joins 'Our Voices' Research by the University of Bedfordshire

We were delighted to be invited to join Our Voices, a program of study led by Dr. Claire Cody and Dr. Claire Soares by the Safer Young Lives Research Centre at the University of Bedfordshire. Our Voices promotes the involvement of children and young people affected by sexual violence in research, policy, and practice; and our engagement in a Delphi study as a member of their expert panel, allowed us to help inform research that aimed to understand how child survivors could be active in decision-making in the fight to end the sexual exploitation of children. By joining this study, we weren’t only able to contribute to the building of knowledge around this theme, but also reflect on and improve upon how we support child survivors to raise their voices and call for action. We are grateful to the University of Bedfordshire for including us. For more information on the Delphi Study and resulting resources, click here.
